This evening, we are proud to present Dr. Scott Bolton, Principal Investigator of the Juno mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Dr. Bolton will present highlights of Juno’s discoveries, as well as how Juno fits into the history and future of space exploration, and what to expect in the next years of Juno’s mission as it continues its exploration of the Jovian system.
The Juno mission is truly extraordinary.
Not only is Juno the first spacecraft to explore the full Jovian system; since its first orbit, Juno has delivered one revelation after another about the inner workings of the largest planet in our Solar System.
Like its namesake, the Roman goddess, Juno is discovering the true nature of Jupiter, by obtaining observations of the planet’s interior, atmosphere, polar aurora, magnetosphere, rings, and moons.
Through multiple flybys, Juno has brought us closer than ever to three of Jupiter’s most intriguing Galilean moons: Ganymede, Europa, and Io.
Launched in 2011, Juno spent five years venturing through deep space before entering Jupiter’s orbit in 2016, making discoveries that have since rewritten the textbooks about the gas giant.
Originally planned to last seven years, Juno is continuing to contribute to scientific discoveries to this day.
With this extended mission, Juno is answering fundamental questions that arose during the first part of its mission, while reaching beyond the planet to explore Jupiter’s ring system and the Galilean satellites.
Dr. Scott Bolton is the Principal Investigator of NASA’s Juno mission and was a member of the technical staff at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for 25 years prior to joining the Southwest Research Institute.
Dr. Bolton’s experience in aerospace and space science spans over more than 30 years, with experience ranging from mission design and engineering to scientific research and program management.
He has attended several prestigious universities, such as Caltech, and the University of California at Berkeley.
Furthermore, Dr. Bolton leads several educational programs spanning elementary through university levels.
As a product of his lifelong pursuit to advance the intersection of art and science, he has participated in collaborations with numerous artists, record companies, and production companies.
